Nobody has an ideal life all the time. Few people feel that they are “enough,” especially during adolescence. No-one pleases everybody.

That’s OK.

I went to school from kindergarten to ninth grade with basically the same group of kids. A few people moved in and out of the schools, but for the most part, I knew everyone from kindergarten forward. I often felt inadequate. I wasn’t “rich.” I wasn’t “pretty.” I wasn’t “as smart” as someone else. I wasn’t “funny.” I wasn’t “talented” or “athletic.” I was “different” and I rarely felt good enough. I actually had a “friend” in sixth grade who decided it would be a good idea to spend 15 minutes telling me all my faults so that I could improve. That was not a pleasant experience.

When I was in ninth grade, I had an English teacher who was more than an English teacher—she was a life coach before life coaches were “a thing” and even before the title existed. …
